Dr Jong Bhak
director, Korean Bioinformation Center (KOBIC)

The greatest innovation in my field (bioinformatics) is the usage of ‘openfree (as I call it) hypertext’ system based bioinformation knowledge portals such as Omics.org. These use wiki and blog programs. Wikipedia is a good example of an openfree hypertext server that is a general purpose encyclopaedia.

Now, special biological information servers based on wiki are spreading on the net. Exchanging biological/scientific information via openfree hypertext servers will revolutionise the collaborative work of biology/science in the near future as much as the internet itself did to biology in the 1990s. The sites include: www.biolicense.org, www.bioperl.org and www.biopedia.org.

In a specific drug discovery field, the greatest technology innovation I have seen is real time protein-protein interaction detection technology called MAGIC: (Won J, Kim M, Yi YW, Kim YH, Jung N, Kim TK. Abstract: A magnetic nanoprobe technology for detecting molecular interactions in live cells. Science. 2005 Jul 1;309(5731):121-5.)

Jong Bhak is director Korean Bioinformation Center (KOBIC) and founder of a biological philosophy, Biosophy, which combines Eastern and Western ways of researching nature.
